Timbuktu´s fear and freedom
The islamists are gone. But Timbuktu´s inhabitans are still scared and traumatized of them.A few weeks after the french military arrived, Timbuktu is still isolated. Neither aid convois nor journalists are allowed to pass the street to the north part of the country.
The first military convoi, that was able to cross over needed inhabitent´s help to find Timbuktu, that you can´t reach with streets or ways, but only in little paths. The telephone connection is aborted, the air so full of sand and dust that you can barely see. The streets are deserted. Scattered you can find wooden stalls where men sell gasoline mixed with water.
A survivor tells that the situation changed abruptly when the islamists came. They made new rules. They prohibited women to go to the street accompanied by a man, they forbit them to work and forced them to disguise themselves. They forbit the dance, the music, the football. They wanted to break the city´s culture!
Now after the french entry and the islamists´withdrawal the fear in the city is still large that the islamists will come back, after the french militar leaves Timbuktu. Also the fear of a chaos caused by the bad organized and destroyed structore worries the people.
